Pentel EnerGel-X Liquid Gel Ink Pen Review

This is the Pentel EnerGel-X retractable needlepoint liquid gel ink pen.

The body is a translucent gray with a textured rubber grip. The clip is strong. Works great on a single sheet of paper or multiple ones. The grip section is latex-free and very grippy. The textured tire track like ridges on the rubber is very comfortable. My fingers hardly slide from the grip section. Definitely one of the best part of the barrel.

The Pentel Energel X is the retractable version of the Pentel Energel. It comes in fine, medium, and bold tip sizes. In both needle point and conical metal tip. It is available in 6 colors.

The pen measures 14.6cm long and 1cm across. It is a bit on the longer end of average size pens.

Pentel heavily advertises the superior quality of their Energel ink. The Energel ink is a high performance ink technology that combines the qualities of liquid and gel ink for a super smooth writing experience.

We'll test this out on our own. Here's a bit of writing practice. The pen lays down a bold line. Always a good start. Doesn't skip as well. There are no noticeable ink blobs from the down strokes. It is also very smooth. There are no scratchiness even at odd angles. Pentel has done well with this pen. It is a very smooth writer with great ink flow.

Let's s how thick the line width is. As a needle point pen it is much more suited for drafting than writing as the needle point tends to get much closer to the edge of a ruler than a conical tip, you can then expect a thinner line than what you'd get from a conical tip. Yup, it is a bit thinner at 0.4mm than the 0.5mm it should be. It just shows how smooth the Energel ink is that their smooth flowing pen has no scratchiness even at this thin line.

Pentel has also advertised that the Energel ink is a fast drying ink. Perfect for lefties. We'll see how well it does. It doesn't dry immediately but it does dry after 1 second. Still a good pen for lefties to use.

Lastly is the waterproofness of this Energel ink. Dab it with a bit of water and it's fine. There are no details lost but there is a lot of ink wash made. The wash can smudge up the writings a bit but overall the ink stays on the paper. This is a serviceable waterproof ink. Just watch out for that ink wash.

If you want a super smooth writing waterproof pen in a retractable body with an excellent rubber grip then the Pentel EnerGel X is the perfect pen for you.
