Ever wanted a mechanical pencil that won't break your pencil lead.
This is the Zebra Delguard. the plastic mechanical pencil of our dreams.
The body is plastic with with a clear transparent grip section. It has raised ribs unevenly placed for gripping but overall it is still plastic. It may not be that confortable for long periods of time. and The lead sleeve is non retractable but it's in a unique conical shape. The odd shape may help the durability of the lead sleeve in accidents.
It also features an eraser covering the lead tube. Not the greatest eraser but it's always nice to have for emergencies.
I have here the .5 lead model but there are also .3 and .7 models available. I would really like to own a 0.3 one.
It is a straighforward mechanical pencil. Push the push button and the lead will come out. Simple. The clever engineering doesn't come until you're already using the pencil.
The Delguard System is in simpler terms an advance suspension system for the pencil lead and it's clutch. Think of shock absorbers in cars. The Delguard system protects your pencil lead from extreme pressure which is a common cause of lead breakage.
It does this in two ways. The first is by having the suspension system in place, a spring inside the pencil absorbs pressure away from the pencil lead . The 2nd way is by utilizing the unique conical pen sleeve attached to another spring system to guard the pencil lead from additional diagonal pressure.
During some normal writing practice, I didn't notice anything abnormal when writing with the pencil. A little springy-ness when applying hard pressure as you would nomally expect from a spring suspended pencil. but it was pretty solid. If you didn't know it, it performs like a normal mechanical pencil.
During the practice I didn't get a single lead breakage even when writing at different angles with varying pressure. The delguard system works beautifully.
and it even took me a while to succesfully break a pencil lead when using the Delguard and I had to cheat a little and use a much longer pencil lead tip that what I would normally use.
If you write with mechanical pencils exclusively or use them through long periods, The Delguard is a great pencil to have as it will increase the mileage you get from normal lead refiils and decrease the frustrations you get from frequent lead breakage since it would take a good bit of effort to break the pencil lead.
If you don't like a little springyness to your mechanical pencil still get the delguard it's an awesome mechanical pencil thats engineered mechanism is unobtrusive but effective.
